CEDAR LAKE | Former Cedar Lake Town Council member Jerry Smith said Tuesday that he’s ready to get to work as interim police chief.

“I’m here to do the job,” said Smith, who had applied for the position before former Police Chief Randall Majersky was hired. “If they decide to go outside (to find a new permanent chief), I’ll understand. I’ve been there.”

The Cedar Lake Metropolitan Police Commission meeting Tuesday was Smith’s first as interim chief since he was appointed last week. Smith’s appointment came in the wake of resignations last week from Majersky and police commission Chairman Greg Rambo.

Town Council members who attended Tuesday’s meeting declined to comment on Majersky’s resignation. They also did not comment on how soon a permanent chief will be appointed.

Town Council President Randell Niemeyer said last week that Mayersky was not meeting goals set by the council.

Majersky, who had served as chief for roughly a year, remains a member of the Police Department.

He was appointed in November to replace former Police Chief Roger Patz, who resigned at the council's request. Former Police Commissioner Chuck Kouder also resigned about two months ago, accusing the council of trying to micromanage the department.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, former Hebron police officer Morris D. Smoot was sworn in as the newest member of the Cedar Lake department.

Smoot, a 2011 graduate of the Northwest Indiana Police Academy, was sworn in while his wife and mother looked on. Smith is a 1983 graduate of Roosevelt High School in Gary, where he was captain of the wrestling team. He is a recent graduate of University of Phoenix.

Smoot is the 19th full-time officer in the department, Smith said.
