Leah Ipema, 18, was recently recognized by the Lansing Rotary Club for her excellent grades and extracurricular involvement as a senior at Illiana Christian High School in Lansing, where she was named this year’s salutatorian.
“I have been blessed with the encouragement of my teachers and parents throughout my four years at Illiana. It required a lot of work, but it is an honor to be the salutatorian of my class,” Ipema said.
Ipema also is involved with Illiana’s Banquet Committee and tutors students in mathematics and Spanish.
“I love English, anything relating to government and politics, and any biology/anatomy and physiology classes,” she said.
After shadowing a family nurse practitioner, Ipema plans to study nursing and Spanish this fall at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, Ill.
“I would like to be a nurse practitioner, and while I do not know exactly what I would like to specialize in, I shadowed a family nurse practitioner and really enjoyed it,” she said.
“As I begin clinical rotations, I look forward to choosing a specialty.”
The daughter of Paul and Karin Ipema, of Cedar Lake, Ipema is employed as a formal wear sales associate at Dunhill Tuxedos in St. John, and enjoys politics and cheering on the Chicago Blackhawks.
She is a member at Community United Reformed Church in Schererville, where she is involved with the Outreach Committee. “That has been a great blessing in my life,” she said.
