CEDAR LAKE | A 51-year-old Cedar Lake man continued to recover Friday after being rescued Thursday following a trench collapse in Cedar Lake.
Jeff Jillson was in good condition Friday at Franciscan St. Anthony Health in Crown Point, said Bill Bero, media relations specialist for Franciscan Alliance.
Jillson became trapped about 9:15 a.m. Thursday when a 7-foot-deep trench collapsed near the True Value store at 9708 Lincoln Plaza.
Jillson was rescued by Cedar Lake firefighters.
Only Jillson's head and chest were exposed after the collapse, Cedar Lake Fire Chief Todd Wilkening said.
A trench box, used to support a structure during tunneling, was at the work site but wasn't being used before the collapse, Wilkening said.
The Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration is continuing its investigation of the situation.
Chetrice Mosley, an Indiana Department of Labor spokeswoman, said she couldn't release additional details of the investigation.
"We are aware of the incident, and an investigation has been open," Mosley said.
Wilkening said the Fire Department is expected to meet with IOSHA officials next week to discuss their reports.
Jillson was working for McAllister Inc., of Cedar Lake, when the collapse occurred.
Messages left Thursday and Friday at McAllister were not immediately returned.
