CEDAR LAKE | One firefighter was treated for a heat-related injury Friday at the scene of a residential fire, Chief Todd Wilkening said.

The fire was called in at 10:22 a.m. by a neighbor who saw flames shooting out the back of a home at 10912 134th Ave., Wilkening said. He said the occupants were not at home when the fire broke out. Wilkening estimated $120,000 in damage to the property, which was insured.

He said the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it appears to be accidental rather than suspicious.

Fire departments from St. John, Lake Hills, Lake Dalecarlia, Lowell, Crown Point and Beecher, Ill., assisted Cedar Lake. The fire was under control in about 30 minutes, and firefighters stayed at the scene for two hours, Wilkening said.
