CEDAR LAKE | The Hanover School Board of Trustees had no comment Tuesday as to why Superintendent Carol Kaiser has been placed on paid administrative leave.
The board voted 4-1 in favor of keeping Kaiser on leave until the next board meeting in January. Current Board president Dana Griner declined comment as to what action the board might take next month. She also declined to comment on Kaiser’s status, saying it was a personnel issue.
Pat Kocot was the only member to vote against the measure Tuesday. “I want no part of it,” said Kocot, who was taking part in her last meeting as a Hanover trustee. “I don’t think she belongs where she is.” Kaiser did not attend Tuesday’s meeting. Richard Cook, now acting superintendent, ran the meeting in her stead.
Kaiser has been superintendent since Nov. 1, 2008 and recently signed a new, three-year contract set to pay her $114,010 plus benefits, annually. This contract ends June 30, 2015.
The board itself will have some new faces in January. Kocot, a former School Board president, lost her election to Mary Pat Burkel in November. Griner did not run for re-election, and the new board member in her 1st district will be will be Dennis Wilkening.
Mary Joan Dickson was re-elected to an at-large seat. The other two board members, Julie Mueller and James Sakalaris, were not up for re-election.
Prior to coming to Hanover, Kaiser was superintendent of the Smith-Green Community School Corp. in Churubusco, Ind. A native of Robertsdale native, Kaiser was also principal at South Newton High School.
In other board action Tuesday, Trustees terminated the employment of Hanover Central High School book keeper, Jennifer Grcich, effective Dec. 11. Cook and members of the board declined comment on Grcich’s termination, citing personnel issues.
