ST. JOHN | Town officials met Wednesday with Lake County leaders trying to coax St. John into joining a countywide merger of E-911 emergency communications network.

County officials discussed with St. John new terms of a consolidation agreement that would cost the town less money in tax revenues and give it more freedom to choose communication gear its officers will take into the field.

"We had a good meeting," said Tom Dabertin, a county E-911 consultant.  He hopes town officials will decide by the end of this month whether they will sign on to the effort.

St. John officials said in August they thought the county's consolidation would be too costly and inefficient and were attempting to form their own south county E-911 network. Cedar Lake, Lowell and Schererville have expressed interest in St. John's proposal.
