CROWN POINT |The Dawn Brancheau Foundation is gearing up for its third annual Dream Big Walk, a scenic, two-mile walk held in memory of Brancheau, a Cedar Lake native and Andrean High School graduate who was killed three years go in a tragic accident at SeaWorld in Florida.
The walk will be held at 10 a.m. Sept. 15 at the Lake County Fairgrounds, 889 S. Court St., with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. The registration fee is a minimum of $25 for adults and $10 for youths 14 and younger. Visit www.DawnsFoundation.org or www.DreamBigWalk2013.kintera.org for more information.
New this year, the Animal Ambassadors from SeaWorld and Busch Gardens will present a stage show, featuring a pair of Magellanic penguins, a black-and-white ruffed lemur, and other exotic animals.
After the show, all participants are invited to stay to help assemble Doggie Adoption Bags and Family Food Bags, to decorate cards for the foundation's Cards from the Heart Campaign, and to make blankets for the children serviced by Matanya's Hope.
At the completion of the community projects, a picnic lunch will be served for all.
Proceeds from the walk will benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Cedar Lake, Holy Name Vacation Bible School, Mercy Home for Boys and Girls, LYDIA, Matanya's Hope, Perry Ferrini Dog Park, South Suburban Humane Society, and the Lake County Fairgrounds, as well as The Dream Big Scholarship at Andrean High School.
Last year, Lake County Commissioner Gerry Scheub assisted the foundation in "adopting" the gazebo at the Lake County Fairgrounds. The large gazebo sits atop a large hill on the grounds, overlooking Fancher Lake.
"It is a place people can stop by and rest, reflect, and appreciate the beauty of this world," said Diane Gross, Brancheau's sister. Last year, the foundation painted the gazebo in the foundation colors and landscaped it. "It was a wonderful beautification project and great community service project," Gross added.
The intention this year was to install a new roof. M&M Roofing was contacted and graciously offered to supply a new roof to the gazebo at no charge. "We thank M&M Roofing for their support of the foundation and recognize them for joining in our efforts to 'Make a Difference in this World, One Project at a Time'," Gross said.
The Dawn Brancheau Foundation is dedicated to improving the lives of children and animals in need, inspiring others to follow their dreams, and promoting the importance of community service.
