CROWN POINT | Write-on Hoosiers members were joined by fellow writers to celebrate the group's 25th anniversary in a recent event held at the Lakes of the Four Seasons Clubhouse.
Kate Collins, national bestselling author of The Flower Shop Mystery series, gave the keynote address to the 58 fellow writers. “This is a magical night. Creativity buzzes throughout the room. As writers we are all magicians – we create magic on the page,” Collins said.
The silver anniversary was a special one for Write-on Hoosiers president and founder Sharon Palmeri, who also started teaching Creative Writing classes for Merrillville Adult Education 25 years ago.
“Write-on Hoosiers started at the end of the first class I taught. The students told me they were not ready to quit writing after the class. They were all 'hyped up' and encouraged me to start a writers’ group,” Palmeri recalled.
“It was those 10 students that formed the group Write-on Hoosiers – and 25 years later W.O.H is still going strong with 35 members.”
Attending “magicians” included Write-on Hoosiers members, past students of Palmeri’s writing classes, as well as members from Magic Hour Writers, of Schererville, Northwest Indiana Poetry Society, of Lowell, Blank Slate Writers, of Valparaiso, Indiana Writers Consortium, of Hammond, and The Prairie Writers Guild, of Rensselaer/DeMotte.
The banquet room was decorated with memorabilia, scrapbooks, photos, news clippings and magazines. A section of the room was devoted to new authors, where they displayed and sold copies of their books. Gifts and door prizes were plentiful.
