CROWN POINT | Officials plan to close the existing city library at the end of the month to move to the new $12 million library on North Main Street.

The new library is set to open Oct. 22.

Closing time is set for 5 p.m. Sept. 30 for the old library, 214 S. Court St.

No fines will be charged for books due in the three weeks between the time the old library closes and the new one opens, officials said in a newsletter to patrons.

Finishing touches were being added this week to the 46,750-square-foot new library under construction since June 2011.

The three-story, red brick building occupies about a half block in the 100 block of North Main Street. It's next to City Hall and near the heart of the downtown retail district.

Much larger than its predecessor, the new library features expanded areas for children and teens, with more space for computers and activities.

Three meeting rooms in the building will be available to the public, with some applicable fees.

Green space and a garden stocked with native plants outside the library main entrance — on the south side of the building and in middle of the block — is meant to serve foot traffic downtown.

A parking lot is being constructed south of the main entrance. Additional parking is planned for employees and patrons north of the library, at Robinson Court and East Street.

The Main Street site was selected after a sampling of public opinion made it clear patrons wanted the library kept in the downtown, library officials have said.

The structure replaces a library built in 1972 as an annex to the Carnegie Center, the original library.

The Carnegie Center opened in 1908 on South Main Street, built with a $12,000 donation form U.S. industrialist Andrew Carnegie.

A new owner is being sought for the building.
