CROWN POINT | The developer of AmeriPlex complexes in Merrillville and Portage has withdrawn a request that the city rezone land for a similar project proposed for Crown Point.

Holladay Properties Vice President Tim Healy said Tuesday the company is "still working with city officials to bring a project about that works for the city."

But the rezoning application submitted by the company "is not appropriate," Healy said Tuesday. "The important thing is we're still plowing ahead," Healy said. He did not provide details of the company's next step.

Holladay Properties planned to seek a change to planned unit development from the existing business and residential zoning at the proposed site. The request was set to go before the Plan Commission in September, but was deferred at the company's request.

The request has since been withdrawn, city Planning Director Christopher Meyers said.

A medical-related project already had been on board as a tenant of the complex, proposed on 95 acres at the southwest corner of the Interstate 65/U.S. 231 intersection on the city's east side, Healy said in an August workshop with the Plan Commission.

Other medical-related businesses, offices, assisted living for seniors and a hotel also are possibilities for the development, where up to 1,000 jobs could be created and property tax of $1.5 million generated, Healy said.

Apartments included in the residential component proposed as part of the complex met with opposition from neighbors of the location.

Up to 150 apartments would be sited near the interstate as part of the residential component, which was intended to buffer the nearby existing subdivisions Pine Hill and Schmidt Farms from businesses in the proposed complex. Single-family homes and duplexes also were included in the residential component, farther from the interstate.

Holladay Properties' AmeriPlex at the Port, Portage, is home to 46 busineses and 2,000 employees. Tenants of AmeriPlex at the Crossroads, Merrillville, include Dawn Food Products, Pro-Fab Sheet Metal and Pinnacle healthcare Hospital.

Other AmeriPlex complexes are in Indianapolis, South Bend and Nashville, Tenn.
