WHEATFIELD | Plans are well under way by the Wheatfield Chamber of Commerce for the Sixth Annual Sandhill Crane Festival and Car Show, set for Sept. 18 in the Jasper County community.

There are many vendors already committed, but there is still room for more. Craft and food vendor applications are still being accepted. Booth space is $40 for a 10-by-10-foot space, and add $5 for electric service. Call Dianne at (219) 616-4732 to reserve a spot.

The first 100 entrants in the Car, Motorcycle & Tractor Show will receive a goody bag. Registration cost is $15 and registration will start at 7:30 a.m. and continue through 11:30 a.m.

An awards ceremony will be held at 4 pm. For more information on the Car, Motorcycle & Tractor Show, call Bill Davis at (219) 956-4944 or Phill Kuhns at (219) 956-4401.

Children's activities are also being planned. There will be a table for children to draw pictures of sandhill cranes, with prizes for the best drawings.

The committee is still looking for someone to help with face painting and kids' games. If you can help, call Dianne at (219) 616-4732.

The Wheatfield Chamber of Commerce booth will be serving homemade chicken & noodles and ham & beans, starting at 11 a.m. until the food runs out.

There will also be Wheatfield Chamber of Commerce souvenir pottery and wall plaques for sale at the booth and new this year - metal sandhill cranes.

Volunteers are needed to work the food and souvenir booth. Call Doris Myers to volunteer at (219) 956-3707, even for just an hour.

Sorrowful Mother Catholic Church will be hosting a pork chop dinner at the festival, while the First Baptist Church will be selling hot buttered corn on the cob.

Wheatfield firefighters will hold Waterball Games, and Corn Hole Games are also being planned.

There will be a DJ playing music throughout the day, and WLQI 97.7 FM radio will be giving away tickets and other items.

Major sponsors this year include Jasper County R.E.M.C., Boersma Funeral Home, Century Link, WLQI 97.7 FM and The Hamstra Group.
