Crown Point Boy Scout Troop 45 will hold its annual, giant garage sale from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 14.
There is no garage that could hold this sale, however, so it will be held on South Main Street in Crown Point just south of the downtown square and the weekly Crown Point Farmers Market.
The Scouts are seeking donations of furniture, small appliances, clothes, dishes, toys, books and more. Items may be dropped off from 7 to 8:15 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Presbyterian Church, 201 S. Main St., Crown Point.
For more information, call Carl at (219) 741-0573.
Crown Point native and space shuttle astronaut Jerry Ross will return to Northwest Indiana to host the second annual Space Race 5K to benefit the Challenger Learning Center. The event takes place at 8 a.m. Sept. 22 at the Challenger Learning Center, 2300 173rd St., on the Purdue University Calumet campus in Hammond.
Some of the features include a chip-timed, competitive race, “My First 5K” finisher awards and age division awards that will be personalized by Jerry Ross. Space-themed activities will also be featured, including laser light shows and tours of the space mission simulators. New this year is a 2K Fun Walk open to anyone of any ability.
Those attending are welcome to come dressed in a space-themed costume.
“We are very excited that Col. Ross sees the value in our programs to come all the way from Texas to help support this event,” said Becky Manis, executive director of Challenger Learning Center.
As an area native, Ross has supported the Challenger Learning Center in the past and hopes to inspire and encourage children to continue to explore space, science and technology as he was inspired as a child.
Online registration is $15 for adults and $10 for ages 12 and younger. T-shirts are available for an additional $8. Fees increase after Sept. 20. Fro more information, visit www.hometownhappenings.net.
