Burns Funeral Home began a program two years ago to collect worn and tattered U.S. flags.

Those flags will be placed with a veteran who has chosen to be cremated. The flags are destroyed at the end of their useful life honorably by fire.

Burns Funeral Home believes including the flag in the cremation of a veteran honors the flag and the veteran because the flag becomes part of the cremains.

Burns said the program has been enthusiastically accepted by local veterans organizations.

Used flags may be brought to either the Crown Point or Hobart locations. For more information, call Burns at (219) 769-0044.
