CROWN POINT | A proposed redrawing of City Council district lines will be put to a vote in early December, ahead of a year-end deadline.

The council redistricting committee drew the proposed changes over several meetings earlier this year.

The redrawn map is in the hands of the Lake County chairpersons of the Republican and Democrat parties for their review and recommendations, Councilman Andrew Kyres, D-3rd, said.

The map will be put to a City Council vote Dec. 3, Kyres said.

The oversized 1st District would lose population and three other districts would gain in the proposal drawn by the council committee.

The outsized 1st District on the city's east side grew after taking in land mass from an earlier annexation and population from a spurt of new housing in the past decade.

The 1st District's population is about 8,700, compared with the 4th District's population of about 4,400.

A total nearly 3,380 people would be shifted out of the 1st District, and Districts 3, 4 and 5 all would gain population as a result, in the proposed redrawn map. The 2nd District would lose about 935 people.

The changes are meant to distribute population more evenly among the five districts. State law mandates redistricting every 10 years, following a U.S. Census, with a deadline of Dec. 31.

The goal is to have about 5,300 to 5,500 people in each of Crown Point Districts 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, council committee members said earlier.

The new map sets district boundary lines along main roads when possible, committee members said.

Each of the districts elects one City Council member to represent it. Two at-large council members are elected by the city as a whole.
