CROWN POINT | A second large tract of land at the Interstate 65 and 109th Avenue interchange has been rezoned for business in a move geared to attract economic development.
The Crown Point City Council on Monday approved the rezone to business for 42 acres of former farmland at 1210 E. 109th Ave., on the east side of the interchange.
The location has attracted attention as a potential site for a hotel or other commercial development, a spokesman for the property owners told city officials in November. The Plan Commission approved the rezone at that time.
The use is in line with the city's long-term plan for land surrounding the intersection, Mayor David Uran said Monday.
City officials last year fast-tracked the rezoning of 130 acres on the west side of the I-65, 109th Avenue intersection.
Granting business zoning to the 130 acres made it shovel ready for potential development, officials said.
The land had been zoned for residential development, which has slowed in recent years.
The city's interest in the intersection intensified after state highway officials in 2010 opened the 109th Avenue interchange off I-65.
