CROWN POINT | Police are asking for the public's help in identifying a man suspected of stealing donations meant for a 10-year-old boy being treated for cancer.
A jar of donated cash to help cover medical costs for Austin Wielgos was stolen Oct. 26 from The Smoke Shop, 1115 N. Main St., Crown Point, police said.
A suspect entered the store just before 8 p.m. and distracted the clerk, allowing him to take the container and walk out with it, police said.
The suspect is between 16 and 25 years old, was clean shaven and had short brown hair, police said.
The man wore framed glasses, a faded-yellow Timberland pullover hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, black shoes with white around the bottom and a blue stocking cap, police said.
The theft was captured on video surveillance tape in the store, police said.
Austin Wielgos was diagnosed in July with Hodgkins lymphoma, police said. He is undergoing treatment at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.
