CROWN POINT | Help in funding a proposed third round of improvements to the city-owned sports complex could come from a private partnership.
Mayor David Uran was authorized on Monday by the Redevelopment Commission to begin seeking a private entity willing to provide matching funds of up to $2 million for the work.
Officials provided no information on who potential sources of the matching funds might be.
"We can't say until we have something definite," commission member Keith Stevens said.
A third round of work on the complex has been proposed but only as a concept. The work could include improvements to softball fields at the south end of the 95-acre complex, officials said earlier this year.
About $2 million for the work was programmed into a $5 million funding mechanism approved late last year to cover both the second and possible third phases of work on the complex, as well as a proposed community activities center in or near the downtown.
Three new softball fields and other amenities were added in the $3.5 million second phase of work on the complex, whose main entrance is in the 1300 block of North Street on the city's east side.
A $4 million first phase added two artificial turf football/softball fields, improved road access and other amenties.
Local businessman and philanthropist Dean White donated a total $3.1 million in matching funds through his Dean and Barbara White Family Foundation to help cover costs of the the first and second rounds of work.
