CROWN POINT | A little girl who loves helping others found a way to reach out to children living in Newtown, Conn.

Gabrielle Wagner, 7, of Crown Point, turned to her mom, Erika Wagner, for ideas in the wake of the tragedy in Newtown last week. Twenty children and six adults died in the shooting Friday at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

"Gabby wanted to do something," Erika Wagner said. "I wasn't sure what was needed."

A friend put Erika in contact with the Connecticut Parent Teacher Student Association.

The state organization had sent out a call for snowflakes — a flurry of paper snowflakes to greet Newtown children when they return to school in January.

Sandy Hook Elementary School students will be going to a new school when classes resume.

"Please help the students of Sandy Hook have a winter wonderland at their new school," said a posting on the Connecticut Parent Teacher Association website.

Gabrielle liked the idea, her mom said. "She said, 'We should do that.'"

No stranger to helping others, Gabrielle two years ago collected more than 100 pairs of pajamas for needy children as part of the Pajama Program.

The idea of having Gabrielle's friends over to make paper snowflakes in the family living room quickly grew.

What organizers hope will be a communitywide event will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Jan. 5 at First United Methodist Church in Crown Point, with participants invited to create paper snowflakes from materials provided by the church.

If the snowflakes are able to help, even a little, it will be worth it, said Mark Wilkins, First United Methodist Church senior pastor.

"If only one child were to look at those and know how much we care about him, we're golden," Wilkins said.
