CROWN POINT | Charges will be sought against a Crown Point woman whose two young sons allegedly dodged traffic on Main Street early Monday before being sheltered at a nearby business, police said.

Police said witnesses saw the 2- and 4-year-old boys cross Main Street while eastbound on Goldsborough Street. They were on their way to a gas station at the heavily traveled three-way intersection of Merrillville Road and Main and Goldsborough streets.

One witness said the 2-year-old boy came within 4 feet of being struck by a car southbound on Main Street.

Passers-by tried to grab the children to keep them from getting hit before employees of a nearby business were able to shepherd them inside and watch over them until police arrived about 7:45 a.m., according to an offense report provided by Crown Point police.

An officer accompanied by the 4-year-old boy located the children's home, one block west of Main Street, and saw the front door open, police said.

A woman who had been asleep inside answered the door and identified the boys as her sons, police said.

Police had previously contacted the children's mother in mid-July when witnesses reported seeing a child in the street for about 15 minutes.

The mother told police at the time her son had been playing in a backyard swimming pool and got away from her for a second.

A report of the Monday incident was forwarded to Child Protective Services and charges were expected to be sought from the Lake County prosecutor's office, police said.
