CROWN POINT | The Cobe Cup race may have run its last lap unless someone steps up to chair and organize the event, chamber of commerce officials said.

"The chamber board has discussed whether or not we should continue the event without membership support," Julie Olthoff, Crossroads Regional Chamber of Commerce Board chairwoman, said in a Wednesday message to members.

With fewer than two months left before the Memorial Day weekend race, "the Cobe Cup committee has no one to chair this event and volunteers to work the day of the event," Olthoff said in the message.

Preliminary efforts were unsuccessful to find a community group willing to take over organizing the race, Olthoff said.

Interested volunteers were asked to call the chamber at (219) 769-8180 by Monday.

If no volunteers from within the chamber step forward, plans are to issue a news release early next week for other organizations outside the chamber to take over the event, Crossroads Chamber Executive Director Sue Reed said Wednesday.

The race featuring antique vehicles on a course from Crown Point through Cedar Lake and Lowell has been an annual event for the past several decades commemorating the first Cobe Cup race in 1909.

The original Cobe Cup could have put Crown Point on the international racing circuit map, but in 1910 organizers moved it to Indianapolis where it evolved into the Indy 500.

A total of 12 cars vied for the cup in the 1909 race through southern Lake County. Winner Louis Chevrolet in 1911 founded Chevrolet Motor Co.

About 130 vehicles raced last year.

Participation varies from year to year depending on the weather, Reed said, with antique car owners reluctant to expose the valuable vehicles to rain and cold.
