CROWN POINT | Officials will explore ways to regulate vacant, unsafe commercial buildings in the city.

A City Council subcommittee plans to meet to begin identifying such buildings and come up with ways to either make them safe or have them demolished.

The issue was brought to the attention of the City Council on Thursday by Councilman Bob Clemons, R-2nd.

Clemons said he's spotted several unoccupied, rundown commercial buildings in town.

"We don't know if they're safe," Clemons said.

One building has a visibly broken support beam. "The whole roof could come down. We want to make sure our Fire Department knows what's going on," Clemons said.

Fire officials already have designated five or six buildings as unsafe for firefighters to enter, Chief Greg DeLor said.

"We will defend neighbors of the building but we will not engage in a building that is questionable,"  DeLor said.

The City Council ordinance committee will look into solutions, including setting a deadline for the city to inspect a building once it has been vacated.

No meeting date was set.

In other business Thursday, the City Council granted a 10-year tax abatement for a building proposed at 11085 Virginia St., in the Crown East commercial/industrial development.

Nagel Enterprises plans an approximately $900,000 building at the location for an industrial engine service business employing up to nine people, an attorney for the business said.

The business is moving from its current location on Summit Street in Crown Point, the attorney said.
