CROWN POINT | Police took a Crown Point man into custody early Wednesday after he allegedly threatened to shoot family members and a neighbor on Christmas Day.

The man, 46, held police at bay for more than six hours while holed up alone in his house, in the 300 block of Maple Street, in the city's Liberty Park neighborhood.

Police found the man hiding in a bathroom with two dogs when a SWAT team entered the home at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to police.

Nobody was hurt in the standoff.

Police did not identify the man, pending the filing of formal charges of intimidation.

The situation unfolded throughout Christmas Day, with the man growing increasingly agitated over his belief a neighbor stole something of his, police said.

When left alone in the house while family members went to visit other relatives, the suspect called and told the relatives he had just shot the neighbor, police said. The suspect also threatened to shoot his family members when they returned to the home, police said.

A total six or seven rifles and shotguns were found in the home, according to the results of a preliminary investigation by police.

The man refused attempts to contact him by police or family members, and tear gas canisters deployed into the house failed to force him out, police said.

The Northwest Regional SWAT team then went in and located the man. He was taken to the Lake County Jail, police said.

Crown Point Police Chief Pete Land praised police for their work.

"The fact that the suspect was reported to have a variety of weapons and was proficient in using them obviously caused us some serious concerns," Land said. "The team did a great job in their patience and handling of the scene."

The investigation continues, Land said.
