CROWN POINT | Crown Point police have a new K-9, a German shepherd named Ace.

Ace and partner Officer David Wilkins are in their second week of training. They will join Officers Jeff Eldridge and Stanko Gligic and their K-9 partners Buddy and Radar in the department’s K-9 unit.

Ace was bought with funds donated by local businessman and entrepreneur Dean White.

“I knew from a very early age that law enforcement was going to be my career,” said Wilkins, who has been with the Crown Point Police Department three years. “I had an uncle who was on the Lake Station Police Department several years ago and currently have three cousins who are on departments here in the region. Two of them are K-9 handlers.”

Wilkins’ cousins are Hobart Officer Ryan Snedecor and Indiana State Trooper Brandon Lankford, who are both K-9 handlers, and Dennis Wilkins, a Portage police officer.
