CROWN POINT | Military veterans are being sought for inclusion on a new Police Department hiring list.

"We want to partner with military veterans to provide opportunities for gainful employment for veterans," Mayor David Uran said.

Area military veterans groups will be targeted to help spread the word, Police Chief Pete Land said.

Qualified military veterans would become part of a pool of applicants for an updated hiring list being created by the department in anticipation of a possible retirement from the force, officials said.

Applicants who first pass a physical agility test will be given a written exam newly adopted by the department.

The Stanard and Associates exam tests cognitive abilities, Land said.

"You don't have to be in law enforcement to score well," he said.

The test will make up just one component of the application process, Land said.

"We'll still conduct interviews and follow our usual process," he said.

A method for weighting various components of the application process is still being worked out, Land said.

Word also will go out to area colleges and universities about the department's intent to seek applicants, Land said.

"I anticipate a good number of applicants," Land said, with at least 100 expected.

The department's four most recent hires, three in 2011 and one in 2012, where chosen from a previous hiring list that has expired, Land said.

The four hires brought the department's ranks to an all-time high of 41.

The promotion of Officer Sean Steffel to 2nd class patrolman from probationary status was approved Wednesday by the Board of Public Works and Safety. Steffel was hired in 2012.

The board also approved the purchase of the Stanard and Associates written exam, along with a test-security agreement with the company. A fee of $25 charged to applicants taking the exam was approved by the board.
