Take time this afternoon to visit the Old Lake Courthouse for its 135th anniversary. A free celebration will begin at 2 p.m. and continue until 5.

Visit the Lake County Historical Museum in the courthouse on the downtown square. Enjoy sitting in the ballroom as Jim Bielefeld works his magic on the piano while you look through scrapbooks detailing courthouse history. Visit with historic impersonators as they walk around the square. Enjoy choral music by Merrillville and Crown Point high school students. The Courthouse Shops will be open.

Crown Point native and retired NASA astronaut Jerry Ross will sign copies of his book beginning at 2:30 p.m., and a copy of his DVD will play in the courtroom. Beck’s Bakery will serve cake at 3:30.

Indian Maidens hold round-up

Also today from 5:30 to 7 p.m., Indian Maidens will hold its annual round-up at Solon Robinson Elementary School, 601 Pettibone St.

Indian Maidens is a mother/daughter organization for girls 5 and older with their mothers. The cost is $65 for one mother/daughter and $10 for each additional daughter.

As a former Nation Chief for Indian Maidens, I truly recommend this organization. My daughter and I enjoyed our years in Maidens and still enjoy the friendships we made.
