Lightning struck the Timothy Ball Elementary School at 720 W. Summit St., Crown Point, as a front of thunderstorms moved through the area Friday afternoon.
The lightning strike was reported about 2:45 p.m. and firefighters discovered some smoke in the building when they arrived, according to Crown Point Fire Chief Greg DeLor.
Firefighters fanned out around the school to look for the source of the smoke. School was not in session. The lightning struck the highest point of the school, DeLor said.
The school is not far from where the 39th Annual Arts and Crafts Festival and Taste of the Region were taking place in downtown Crown Point.
There was also a report of a lightning strike a little later in St. John, with firefighters responding at the scene with no fire found.
