CROWN POINT | Shop owners will get a chance to star in their own promotional videos as part of the city's Shop Local campaign.

Plans call for the city to team with Crown Point High School to produce vignettes featuring local retailers.

The finished products will be shown on local channels ATT U-Verse 99 and Comcast 26, possibly starting in late January.

"We're excited to partner with the city," High School Principal Chip Pettit said.

Students in the school's Technical Communications course will team with Adam Graper, director of the city's media and technology department, and City Councilwoman Carol Drasga, who has spearheaded Shop Local in Crown Point.

"We'll be focusing on the Shop Local theme and highlighting and accentuating local businesses," Pettit said.

Shop Local promotes spending local dollars in local businesses whenever possible, with the intent of keeping shopping districts viable in cities and towns.

Retailers can participate by downloading an application expected to be available soon on the city website,

Applicants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, Drasga said. "But we'll have room for many, many people," she said.

Drasga said she plans to talk individually with retailers who apply to address their questions before students begin videotaping the promotional spots.

Retailers who've already learned of the project are "very, very excited," Drasga said.

Students involved in the project already are experienced in producing the high school weekly video announcement, which is broadcast to the student body on the school's TV station, Pettit said.

Students will gain valuable experience through their involvement in the program, Pettit said.

"It offers some real world experience, and it's also a partnership with the city. We're working with students on the notion that giving back to the community is an important concept," Pettit said.
