Tomorrow is Veterans Day. Remember to put your flag out to honor our men and women who have served our country. Crown Point American Legion Post 20 and the city of Crown Point are hosting a Veterans Day ceremony on the east side steps of the Old Courthouse at 10:30 a.m. Monday.

Veterans and active military who are relatives of students and staff at Col. John Wheeler Middle School are invited to lunch from 10:20 a.m. to 12:35 p.m. (all four lunch periods) Monday at the school, 401 W. Joliet St. Veterans will be treated to lunch and will have a seat of honor with their student/staff relative(s) to enjoy a special music video.

This Friday, all veterans and current military are invited to St. Mary Catholic Community School, 405 E. Joliet St., Crown Point, for a special program at 9 a.m., followed by coffee and doughnuts in Hammes Hall.

Dine on spaghetti

Also, don’t miss St. Mary Catholic Community School’s famous Spaghetti Supper on Wednesday. Lunch hours are 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., with dinner from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Cost is $8 for adults and children 15 and older. Senior citizens 60+ and children 5 to 14 pay $5. Children 4 and younger eat free.

Drama on stage

The stage drama "Twelve Angry Men" opens at 7 p.m. Friday at the Crown Point High School Auditorium, 1500 S. Main St. Additional performances are set for 7 Saturday and Nov. 22 and 23.

Breakfast at church

St. John United Church of Christ will host its free Breakfast and Blessings from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday A free will offering is accepted. Due to Thanksgiving, this will be the only breakfast hosted by the church this month.

Help pack boxes

If you are looking for something to do Monday, the Indiana Welcome Center, 7770 Corinne Drive, Hammond, will be hosting an Operation Christmas Child Packing Party from 6 to 8 p.m. in conjunction with 

The goal is for volunteers to pack 1,000 boxes with small toys, school supplies and personal hygiene items, which are still needed. RSVP to Clair Boone at

Ugly lamp contest

Do you have an ugly lamp? Enter it in this year’s Ugly Lamp Contest at the Indiana Welcome Center from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week. Voting will run from Nov. 21 to Dec. 16. Two categories, “Born Ugly” and “Made Ugly,”  are available.

Spellers preparing

Many local students in grades 4 to 6 are spending  time practicing spelling words in preparation for this year’s Indiana Elementary Spell Bowl. Students on more than 400 school teams of eight will gather at more than 30 sites statewide Nov. 21 to test their skills.

Once again, local spell bowl competition will be hosted at 5 p.m. Nov. 21 by Timothy Ball Elementary School at Col. John Wheeler Middle School, 401 W. Joliet St., Crown Point. The competition is administered by the Indiana Association of School Principals.
