South Shore Arts has new classes beginning Monday at the South Shore Arts Crown Point Branch, 123 N. Main St., along with a variety of one-time workshops. Children and adults of all ages can enjoy learning a new skill or craft. To see class descriptions, workshops and more information, visit www.southshoreartsonline.org.

Musical theater

"Guys and Dolls" opens Friday at the Crown Point High School Auditorium.

Choose from 7 p.m. performances this Friday and Saturday or March 21, 22 and 23, or a 2:30 p.m. matinee March 17.

Officers honored

Congratulations to Canine Officer Jeff Eldridge and his partner Buddy, slected 2012 Narcotics Detection Team of the Year. The President’s Award was presented to the pair at The American Police Canine Association annual banquet in Nashville, Ind.

During two separate searches, Buddy detected 2,000 pounds of marijuana with a street value of $3 million .

Buddy is one of two canines working in the Crown Point Police Department, which is evaluating the addition of a third dog.

Tops in geograohy

Congratulations to Nicky Waren, eighth-grader art St. Mary Catholic Community School.

Waren won the school’s Geography Bee and qualifed at the state level to join 99 other contestants in Indianapolis on April 6. This is Waren's third straight year competing.

Science is their game

Colonel John Wheeler Middle School students will be competing in the school's first Science Fair on March 21. The entire eight grade has designed projects that will be judged by Mayor David Uran, Fire Chief Greg DeLor and other community leaders.

Okay to yell "fore"

Crown Point Community Library will host “A Hole Lot of Fun”, a unique fundraiser June 1. The first and second floors of the library will be turned into an 18-hole miniature golf course.

Health vendors welcome

First Financial Bank in Crown Point is seeking vendors for its Health/Wellness Fair and Exhibit from 10 a.m. to noon April 20 at 11890 Broadway. Space is limited. There is no fee.
