CROWN POINT | The Family Express chain is expected to open a second Crown Point location by the end of the year.
The approximately 3,500-square-foot convenience store and fueling station is under construction at 998 S. Court St., said Gus Olympidis, Family Express Corp. President and CEO.
The Valparaiso-based chain opened in August a $2.1 million service station and car wash at 802 E. North St.
The Court Street location is on the site of a defunct former gas station, most of which is being removed, Olympidis said.
The new store will be the Family Express chain's 60th location and was designed to meld with the neighborhood.
"What's really exciting is that it brings us into the heart of the residential concentration of south Crown Point," Olympidis said. "We're in the heart of a residential neighborhood and we want the store to feel warm and cozy."
The site, at the intersection of Court Street and and West Franciscan Drive, across from the Lake County Fairgrounds, presented challenges, Olympidis said.
"This store was challenged by an absence of space. It took a great deal of architectural innovation to deliver the quality project that this particular site is," Olympidis said.
The Family Express store will be substantially larger than the Amoco station which occupied the site previously, Olympidis said.
An existing car wash at the location will be retained but is being gutted and reformulated to match Family Express standards and the brick mortar exterior of the new store, Olympidis said.
New sidewalks and curbs are planned at the site, he said.
The store will feature the chain's fresh-daily milk deliveries and supplies of fresh food items including eggs and bacon, he said.
