CROWN POINT | Lake County Purdue Master Gardeners gathered recently to celebrate countless hours volunteers spend helping others grow with gardening and landscaping. 

The group's annual spring banquet at SS. Peter and Paul Macedonian Orthodox Church, enabled gardeners to exchange ideas and honor active members.

Scholarship Committee Chairperson Peter Kesheimer,  announced the six 2013-14 scholarship recipients: Patrick Brown, of Gary and Purdue University; Nelly Chavez-Hernandez, of  East Chicago and Ball State University; and Purdue University students Patrick Brown and Dustin Denisiuk, both of Gary; Anthony Escobedo and Daniel Misch, both of Crown Point; and Brandon Miksich, of Schererville.

Scholarships donors this year included the Illiana Garden & Pond Society - $8,000;Lake County Master Gardener Association Inc. - $2,212; Anonymous - $1,250; and Hobart Garden Club - $300.

Nikky Witkowski, Lake County Purdue Extension Educator/Coordinator of the master gardener program, spoke on food safety in community gardens.

Certified Master Gardener Awards went to Denise Harris and Dawn Vanzo. Jim Colias, Pat Dunham, Elaine Hough and Ron Jones received the Advanced Master Gardener awards.

Bronze Badge recipients included David Gottneid, Marlene Gransinger, Ray Norder, Joanne Stratton and Fangling Yu. Sheila O'Toole earned the Silver Badge, while Joanne Gruber attained Gold Badge status.

Kathy Kick, chairperson for the annual Plant Sale and Garden Walk, has been meeting with committee members to plan both events.

The fourth annual Plant Sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 18, with a rain date of May 19 at Tri Town Safety Village, 1350 Eagle Ridge Drive, Schererville. Perrenials, native shrubs, trees, herbs, and vegetables may be purchased through today from the pre-sale form at www.lakecountymastergardeners.com.

Those in Dyer, Schererville, and St. John willing to share their garden with visitors on from 10 a.m. to 4  p.m. June 22  for the annual garden walk, "Summer Time in the Garden," are asked to contact Kathy Kick at lakecountymastergardeners@gmail.com or Diana Cook at (219) 755-3240.
