CROWN POINT | It was Tuesday Night at the Movies recently as the Hawthorne Arbor of Gleaners hosted its annual outing for clients, staff and families of The Arc of Northwest Indiana.
Gleaners members gathered at The Crown Theater to welcome, distribute tickets help seat their 125 guests, who also received free popcorn and a beverage while watching "Smurfs II."
Hawthorne Arbor President Dan Sutton said the Lowell chapter of the Gleaner Life Insurance Society started the movie night event, which has since been added to a list of 24 community service programs available to local chapters each year.
Sue Crisman, director of public relations for The Arc of NWI, said the Gleaners are gracious hosts. "It's always fun to go to the movies, and this is a real treat for Arc clients, complete with popcorn and drinks.
The Gleaners also host holiday parties at The Arc's South Center here in Crown Point, and make substantial contributions to the organization," Crisman added. "We appreciate all they do - they've got goodness down."
Crisman added that clients, both those who reside in supported living and those who participate in day services, who may be self-conscious in public can relax "and be themselves in a welcoming atmosphere" among friends and family at movie night.
