Today, Christians all over the world are celebrating the Risen Christ. I wish everyone a blessed and happy Easter. Hopefully, warm weather is right around the corner.

Quilts on display

If you are looking for something fun to do, take time next Saturday to tour the Old Homestead, 227 S. Court St. in downtown Crown Point. This month, see a quilting demonstration and display from 1 to 3 p.m.

Learn how the women used old cloths to make warm blankets for their family.

This is a free family event offered to the community by members of the Old Homestead Foundation.

Employee recognized

Belated congratulations to Marsha Essary, recognized as the city of Crown Point’s Employee of the Month for February.

She has worked for the mayor’s office for seven years and this year, she was responsible for registering all senior citizens who qualify for the city’s senior discount program.

If you feel that an employee of the city has gone above and beyond their job to help you, nominate them for this recognition by calling the Office of Special Events at (219) 662-3290.

AP test grant

Once again, Crown Point High School has received a grant from the Crown Point Community Foundation for its Advance Placement end-of-the-course test. Students taking AP classes may take a test at the end of the year and, if they pass, will receive college credits.

While math and science tests only cost $8, tests for other academic subjects cost $89 each. The grant is used to help students who need financial assistance to be able to take these tests.

Students must write an essay and are chosen to receive a grant by a panel of judges based on need, number of students taking the test and the quality of their essay. For more information about making a difference in Crown Point, contact the foundation at (219) 662-9493.

Get ready for Hub Run

It’s time to get out those running shoes and start gearing up for the Hub Run. This year the 5K/2K Race will be held May 5 and is again a CRS Gold Cup Series Race.

Registration is being accepted, and on or before April 21, the cost is $20 for adults and $10 for children 10 and younger. Starting April 22, cost is $25 for all ages.

Elementary school parents and students are encouraged to register early and to get family members and friends to register, too. Once again, one school recognized for the greatest number of race participants.

Run the 5K distance or run or walk the 2K. The race will start and finish at the Old Lake Courthouse downtown. Visit to download a registration form.
