Open house for new health center scheduled for Sunday
CEDAR LAKE | The public is invited to an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday for the new Franciscan Alliance Cedar Lake Health Center, 6831 W. 133rd Ave.
The open house will feature free health screenings for blood glucose, blood pressure and pulmonary function. There also will be refreshments, giveaways and tours.
Due to limited parking, shuttle service will be provided from the St. Michael the Archangel National Catholic Church lot, 6629 W. 133rd Ave., just east of the health center. For more information about the clinic, call (219) 374-5970.
Holiday at the POPS concert benefits hospital's VNA Fund
LAPORTE | Tickets for the 18th annual LaPorte Hospital Foundation Holiday at the POPS are on sale.
The philanthropic concert event kicks off the holiday season and takes place Dec. 8 at the LaPorte Civic Auditorium, 1001 Ridge St. Doors open at 6 p.m., with the concert beginning at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
Balcony tickets are still available. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 12 and under. Group sales are available; buy 10 tickets and get the 11th free. Reserved group seating options also are available. Buy tickets at www.holidaypopslaporte.org.
Proceeds benefit the foundation’s VNA Fund, which supports Indiana University Health LaPorte VNA Services and other vital philanthropic health care needs in the community.
USF Crown Point to host info session on programs
CROWN POINT | The University of Saint Francis Crown Point will host a question-and-answer session from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Dec. 11 at Franciscan Point, 12800 Mississippi Parkway, Pavilion U.
The session is geared toward those seeking entry to the Associate of Science in Nursing and the Licensed Practical Nurse to Associate of Science in Nursing programs.
An admissions counselor will explain University of Saint Francis and School of Nursing entry requirements and how the nursing programs can be completed at a full- or part-time pace.
Candidates can bring college transcripts for an evaluation of credits for transfer into the ASN or LPN-ASN programs. An RSVP is suggested but not required.

Coalition to put on diabetes conference Thursday in Gary
GARY | In honor of National Diabetes Month, the Lake County Minority Health Coalition in partnership with Purdue Heart Health will hold its Too Sweet for Your Own Good diabetes conference from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at Gary Community Health Net, 1021 W. Fifth Ave.
The event will focus on spreading awareness about diabetes and enhancing the quality of life for those living with the disease. Vendors will provide information and giveaways. Health screenings, prize raffles and refreshments will be free.
An interpreter will be on-site for Spanish-speaking individuals. Attendees can RSVP in English or Spanish at (219) 885-9755.
The group also will celebrate and honor longtime community health advocate Rosie Thomas, who died earlier this month after battling cancer.
