Local runners of all levels and abilities are invited to the call out meeting for the 2014 Bank of America Chicago Marathon Opportunity Enterprise Team.

The Lake County call out will be held from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Franciscan Omni Health and Fitness Schererville, 221 U.S. 41.

The Bank of America Chicago Marathon has made significant changes to race registration and this year, entry will be determined by a lottery. One of the exceptions to this is registering with a partner charity such as Opportunity Enterprises, which offers guaranteed race entry.

If runners commit to the OE Marathon Team at the call out meeting, they will receive a complimentary gift. In exchange for fundraising for the agency, team members also will receive a structured training program, a team shirt, weekly e-newsletters with training tips and team updates, exclusive access to a race day hospitality tent with restroom facilities in Charity Village, a catered pasta dinner in Northwest Indiana the Friday before the race, and transportation to and from the marathon Oct. 12.

Runners who want to join the team but are unable to attend the call out meeting, and those who would like to sponsor the OE Marathon Team, should contact Lindsey Ellis at (219) 464-9621, ext. 239.

Volleyball showcase

The Diggz of Northwest Indiana will host the Epic United Winter Volleyball Showcase from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at 4590 W. 61st Ave., Hobart.

A number of area college coaches have been invited to watch as sophomore, junior and senior high school volleyball players show off their skills during drills and practice. More than 100 prep players will be put through a series of drills while coaches watch from the stands. The coaches will be provided with a booklet containing a profile on each girl that includes height, touch height, intended major in college and grade point average.

Spectators are invited to watch the event free of charge.

Free income tax preparation

The American Association of Retired Persons is offering free income tax preparation for elderly and low-income residents at the Crown Point Community Library, 122 N. Main St.

In conjunction with the IRS, a free e-filing service will be available for qualifying tax returns. AARP tax counselors have been trained and certified to IRS standards.

Tax returns will be prepared, in the Tri-Kappa Meeting Room, from 9 a.m. to noon Mondays and Wednesdays beginning Feb. 5 until April 9, and Thursdays beginning Feb. 20 to March 13. This year appointments will not be scheduled by telephone.

Walk-ins only will be served if a counselor is available. If a counselor is not available, an appointment will be made for you and/or your representative to come to the library during the hours tax returns are being prepared.
