Happy Labor Day. This weekend marks the unofficial end of summer, but there is still a lot going on for families in Crown Point on weekends.

Congressman to speak

U.S. Rep. Peter J. Visclosky, D-Merrillville, will be the guest speaker at First Financial Bank’s free Morning Business Hour from 8 to 9 a.m. Sept. 13 at 11890 Broadway, Crown Point. An RSVP is appreciated by emailing Judith Mariola at

Anniversary luncheon

Northwest Indiana Community Associates of the Art Institute of Chicago will turn 20 on Sept. 18. Membership includes more than 300 people from Lake and Porter counties.

Everyone is welcome to an Anniversary Celebration at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 18 at Innsbrook Country Club, 6701 Taft St. in Merrillville. Guests and members will enjoy memorabilia, an art lecture and luncheon. Jeff Nigro will discuss Gloria Groom’s current exhibit. Cost is $30. Donations still welcome

Boy Scout Troop 45 continues collecting donations for its annual Garage Sale. Drop off items from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays or 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays at the First Presbyterian Church parking lot, 218 S. Main St.

All household items, books, CD’s, DVD’s, baby items, clothing and small appliances are welcome. They cannot accept large appliances, building supplies computer monitors or televisions made before 2009.

Mark your calendars for the sale from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 14, south of the Farmers Market on South Main Street.

Church planning sale

If you miss the Boy Scouts, St. Matthias Church is also accepting donations for its Fall Garage, Antique and Bake Sale.

Donations may be dropped off at St. Matthias, 101 W. Burrell Drive, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, Sept. 19 and 23.

If you need large items picked up, call the parish office at (219) 663-2201.

The sale will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 26 and from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 27.

Run, walk and party

Sept. 22 will be a busy Sunday. Start the day by joining Crown Point native Jerry Ross, retired astronaut, as he emcees a 5K run/2K walk for the Challenger Learning Center of Northwest Indiana at Purdue University Calumet in Hammond.

Step out with Team Unforgetttables as they join the Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Hidden Lake Park in Merrillville. The walk begins at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 22.

Then come back to Crown Point to enjoy the 135th Anniversary Celebration of the Grand Old Lady. The old Lake County Courthouse is 135 years old and the Lake Courthouse Foundation is throwing a free party from 2 to 5 p.m. Sept. 22 on the downtown square.

Jerry Ross will sign copies of his book and visit with Hub City friends. Enjoy cake provided by Beck's Bakery and visit the historic Lake County Historical Society Museum. Choral music will be provided by Crown Point and Merrillville high school groups.
