CROWN POINT | Purdue Extension educators Julie Jones and Jennifer Govan are the recipients of the 2012 Excellence in Urban 4-H Programming Award presented by Debbie Nistler, President of the National Association of Extension 4-H Agents (NAE4-HA). Jones and Govan have been instrumental in creating new 4-H youth programs in urban communities in East Chicago and Gary.
Their achievements were recognized at the NAE4-HA annual conference held October 21-25 in Orlando, Florida. As educators in the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service, Jones and Govan coordinate 4-H programming throughout Lake County. Several thousand local youth participate each year in traditional 4-H community clubs, school-based clubs, science clubs, school enrichment programs like Agriculture Awareness Days and Chicken Embryology in the Classroom, and the 4-H Youth and Families with Promise afterschool mentoring program.
