CROWN POINT | Lake County attorneys ranked two Superior Court magistrates and a Superior Court public defender as the best choices to fill the seat of Lake Superior Court Civil Division judge.

The Lake County Bar Association ranked the 21 candidates by their competence, temperament and character in a survey conducted earlier this month. The position has been vacant since earlier this year when Judge Gerald Svetanoff died.

A selection committee elected by Lake County attorneys and the Lake County Board of Commissioners will choose the top three candidates. Those choices will be forwarded to Gov. Mike Pence, who will choose the new judge.

The committee was scheduled to meet May 8, but an Indiana Supreme Court justice halted the process because of criticism that local officials named too many women to the committee.

Superior Court Magistrates Michael N. Pagano and Nanette Raduenz were among the top three choices the association chose to fill the seat. Public defender Bruce D. Parent was the other.

Pagano received the most points in competence and character. Parent was chosen as the candidate with the best temperament.
