CROWN POINT | A landowner is asking the city to annex about 20 acres as the potential location for a senior living facility.
The acreage is just outside a southwest boundary of the city, west of Main Street, said Jim Wieser, representing landowner the Barbara Hanaway Trust.
The north 7 acres would be proposed for an assisted living and skilled nursing care building, Wieser said. The facility would be subject to city planning and zoning rules, should the land be annexed.
Wieser said Carmel, Ind.-based Mainstreet Property Group has proposed the senior care center at the location.
"That's what the proposed use is intended to be," Wieser said.
Wieser said the annexation would be considered a "friendly" one. The 20 acres is comprised of three parcels, all owned by the same family, he said.
A fiscal plan is being prepared describing potential benefits to the city of annexing the property, Wieser said.
Councilwoman Carol Drasga, R-5th, said any potential concerns of nearby residents would need to be heard.
Neighbors of the acreage will be notified as part of the annexation process, city officials said.
Annexing the property would improve the city's assessed valuation, Mayor David Uran said.
A Sept. 26 public hearing of the annexation petition was scheduled.
