CROWN POINT | Crown Point High School's Latin Club is joining other Latin clubs from around the state to celebrate Indiana Latin Week with several spirit days the week of Jan. 20-26.

Designed to celebrate and promote the study of Latin in Indiana, it is also a week for Latin students to celebrate and have fun.

Monday has been proclaimed the Friendly Hand of JCL Day  at Crown Point High School, during which Latin club students will share memories of their time with each other.

Tuesday is themed Seize the Day through Latin. Students will share and display famous Latin quotes on their lockers. Wednesday is Purple and Gold Day - celebrating the colors of the Junior Classical League, the state and national parent group for local Latin clubs.

Thursday is Latin Club T-shirt Day, when club members will wear club shirts or other attire supporting the club. Friday celebrates the fashion of the day 2000 years ago with Stol-a Toga Day, during which girls will wear a traditional Roman dress, called a stola, and boys will wear a toga to school.

Crown Point High School’s Latin Club is also sponsoring an Eyeglass Collection Drive during Indiana Latin Week, partnering with area Lions clubs to collect old eyeglasses that wearers no long want. They can be donated through next week in the Foreign Language classrooms and the main office at CPHS, 1500 S. Main St.

CP Latin Club members will also have two special activities this week. On Monday, the group will be ice skating at a club member’s home, and on Thursday, they will meet in the high school from 2:30 to 6 p.m. for pizza, movies, and table games like Taboo and Catch Phrase. Students are meeting every morning to receive information on how to win prizes for getting involved in the promotion of Latin.

Club members have designed several promotional devices to help raise public awareness and earn publicity points for state and national competitions. The CP Latin Club competes at a high level at both state and national conventions each year and would like to repeat its past successes.

To help support the Latin club by displaying a flyer, contact club sponsor, Sara Robertson, at (219) 663-4885, ext. 11265.
