Learn the basics of disc golf at Saturday's clinic

Lake County Parks and Recreation Department and the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority will  host a Disc Golf Clinic from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Lemon Lake County Park Flight Center, 6322 W. 133rd Ave., rural Crown Point.

Attendees will learn the basics of disc golf from Brian Cummings, Professional Disc Golf Association Professional World Championship director and PDGA Hall-of-Famer. He will demonstrate a variety of long shots, disc golfing etiquette, different types of throws dependent on the situation and when to change discs.

There is no cost to participate, but attendees must pay the Lemon Lake County Park gate fee, $5 for in-county residents and $8 for those outside Lake County.

The PDGA Professional World Championships will be played at Lemon Lake County Park and Hidden Lake Park in Merrillville from Aug. 6 through 10. Players will be participating in field events, alternate shot and best shot events, meetings and practices from Aug. 3 through 5.

"Les Miserables" opens Friday

The area premiere of the full Broadway version of "Les Miserables" marks the50th anniversary for Jerauld Reinhart’s Ross Summer Music Theatre.

While the 84-year-old Reinhart’s health has kept him from directing the play and building the sets this year as he has for 47 years, he is still conducting the orchestra and in charge of all the chorus vocal work.

Performances are set for 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and Aug. 2 and 3, and at 3 p.m. Sunday and Aug. 4 in Reinhart Auditorium at Merrillville High School, 276 E. 86th Place. Tickets are available by calling (219) 742-6478 or online at

Those interested in starting a business or growing their business are invited to SBA Day from 5:30 to 8 p.m.Tuesday at Embassies Christ of Church, 4825 Cleveland, Gary.

This seminar is presented by Peoples Bank along with representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration, the NWI Small Business Development Center and Regional Development Company. Participants will learn about SBA-guaranteed loans, and how businesses can purchase a new building or more equipment with as little as 10 percent down.

Chamber marketing seminar

Julie Olthoff, president of VIA Marketing, will discuss the importance of branding and being authentic, website and marketing materials and why it is important to have content that triggers action, media planning and how to best analyze results, at an educational seminar from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 28 at Indiana Wesleyan University, 8415 Georgia St., Merrillville.
