HAMMOND | A Crown Point man who pleaded guilty in a $1.4 million food stamp scheme involving his Blue Ribbon Restaurant and Mini Mart in Gary is seeking a reduced sentence.
Adnan Shatat, 57, was indicted along with his two sons on 10 counts of wire fraud in April 2011 for trading cash for food stamp benefits. Sentencing guidelines require a sentence of 41 to 51 months in federal prison, according to a sentencing memorandum filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Hammond.
Citing a lack of a criminal record, Shatat is seeking a sentence below federal guidelines of less than 41 months in prison.
