Maya James Gutierrez's parents gave her a sweet start in life full of fond memories when they named her.
They said finding a girl's first name was difficult, until they remembered the name of the place they had taken their honeymoon in Mexico more than one year ago.
"It was our vacation getaway, we had a nice time, and it was a name we could agree on," proud dad Rudy Gutierrez said Tuesday.
Maya, who weighed in at 8 pounds, is special in another way as well. She was born at 4:17 a.m. Tuesday at Franciscan St. Anthony Health hospital in Crown Point to Rudy and Kimberly Gutierrez, of Cedar Lake, making her the first baby of the new year born in a hospital in Lake County.
By mid-afternoon, one set of grandparents and one set of great-grandparents already had been there to hold and coo over Maya, Kimberly Gutierrez said.
She said maybe Maya would grow up to be an engineer like her dad.
Rudy Gutierrez said he hoped Maya would grow up to be respectful of others and always put other people first.
