National Merit Scholarship Corp. has announced about 2,500 winners of 2013 National Merit Scholarships.
The scholarships are college-sponsored and grant between $500 and $2,000 a year for up to four years of undergraduate study.
The 2013 Merit Scholarship Competition required students to take a qualifying test to enter the competition. Each semifinalist submitted a scholarship application, which included an essay. Semifinalists also had an outstanding academic record, were endorsed and recommended by a high school official, and earned SAT scores that confirmed the qualifying test performance. Of the semifinalist group, about 15,000 students met requirements for finalist standing. Only a portion became Merit Scholarship winners.
Of those recipients, students in Northwest Indiana won scholarships to attend universities in Indiana, Illinois, Texas and Tennessee.
Brandi Collins, of Crown Point High School, received the National Merit Vanderbilt University Scholarship.
Steven Marquez, of Griffith High School, received the National Merit Indiana University Bloomington Scholarship.
Seth Hershberger, of Kouts High School, received the National Merit Baylor University Scholarship.
Lillianna Pollnow, of Michigan City High School, received the National Merit Indiana University Bloomington Scholarship.
Samuel Dong, of Munster High School, received the National Merit University of Chicago Scholarship.
Additional scholarship winners will be announced in July, bringing the total number of college-sponsored Merit Scholarship recipients to about 4,500 students.
