CROWN POINT | A system to get emergency vehicles through traffic on Broadway will be installed on signals from 93rd Avenue to U.S. 231.
The Opticom system triggers a green light for firetrucks, squad cars and ambulances headed to an emergency, while signaling a red light for all opposing traffic.
Electronics contractor Hawk Enterprises on Friday was awarded a $46,900 contract to install the system on traffic signals at the six intersections.
The project is being paid using city redevelopment funding.
Having the system in place improves response time and enhances safety reliability, city officials said.
"It's part of the city's safety initiative," Fire Chief Greg DeLor said. "It's going to cut down on any accidents by assuring emergency vehicles will have all green lights."
The Opticom system already is in place on city-owned traffic signals at the Indiana Avenue intersections with Summit and North streets, as well as the Bulldog Boulevard intersection with North Street.
Devices already installed in city emergency vehicles trigger the signal change from two blocks away, DeLor said.
Installing the system on Broadway is crucial, DeLor said.
"It is the direct path from the north end of town to (Franciscan St. Anthony Health) hospital or from the south end of town to Methodist (Hospitals Southlake Campus)," DeLor said.
The project has been approved by the Indiana Department of Transportation, city officials said.
