CROWN POINT | Another large tract of land could be rezoned for business on the city's east side near the intersection of 109th Avenue and Interstate 65.
The Plan Commission recommended approving a request to rezone about 42 acres from agriculture to business. The City Council will have the final say.
The land is suitable for development by hotels, restaurants and retail establishments, Gerald Steiner, with the real estate firm Wille and Steiner, told Plan Commission members.
The land is owned by a trust.
The location has attracted attention despite a tough economy, Steiner said, and interest in the property as a hotel site already has been shown. Steiner did not say which hotel chain showed interest.
City officials earlier this year fast-tracked the rezoning of 130 acres on the city's east side to make it shovel-ready for potential development.
Construction on the property could happen sooner if it's shovel ready, Mayor David Uran said then.
The B3 zoning granted by city officials for the 130 acres permits hotels and other commercial development on the property, between Broadway to the west and Interstate 65 to the east, north of 109th Avenue and south of Summit Street.
The acreage previously had been zoned for residential development, which had slowed in recent years.
