CROWN POINT | Four local women will be making their way to Sochi, Russia in February to help local Russian churches share God’s love within their communities during the 2014 Winter Olympics.
Joyce Kennedy, Sue Daily, Katie and Heidi Suitor, all of Crown Point, will head to Sochi with Soar International, a Christian missions organization based in Alaska.
Hillside Community Church, 5201 W. 109th Ave., is hosting a Pancake Breakfast fundraiser for these women from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday. Meals will be served on a donation basis.
Those who would like to support the women but cannot attend the fundraiser can send a tax-exempt gift through Hillside Community Church, P.O. Box 388, Crown Point, IN 46308. Indicate the gift is for the Soar Missions Trip.
Soar International has been working in Russia for many years, providing Christian ministry teams and humanitarian aid, operating summer Bible camps, delivering Christmas stockings to children in need, giving away Baskets of Hope each Easter and organizing women’s events, remodeling projects and other ministries.
With the Olympics offering an opportunity to bring cultures together in a way that does not normally occur, Russian churches are organizing Fun Zones to in their communities to share in the excitement of hosting the Olympic games.
Fun Zones will serve as hospitality centers where people can watch Olympic events on big screens, enjoy refreshments, and be ministered to through evangelistic films. Children will enjoy balloons, bubbles, puppets, clowning, and Gospel magic.
Soar will send three teams of 30 people to go out into public places and invite people to the Fun Zones, make refreshments and help run activities. The Crown Point women plan to be part of Soar’s third team, heading to Russia from Feb. 18 to 27.
