CROWN POINT | A Warsaw, Ind.-based company is appealing to city zoning officials for permission to install a cell tower on land zoned for homes.

STC Towers Inc. is proposing the 175-foot tower at 1244 S. Indiana Ave., on land owned by St. John United Church of Christ. The site is in a residential zone.

City code does not permit cell towers in residential zones. STC Towers is appealing administrative authority on the issue.

The company's petition is expected to be heard July 22 by the Board of Zoning Appeals. The June meeting of the zoning appeals board, at which the STC petition was to have been heard, was canceled when a storm cut power to City Hall, the location for the meeting.

In a May letter to city officials, company director Sean Boylan said STC Towers "has gone to great lengths to ensure all required development standards have been met or exceeded" to locate the tower at the South Indiana Avenue location.

The proposed site is a wooded area north of St. John United Church of Christ. STC Towers would lease the site from the church for undisclosed terms, according to a lease agreement provided to the city Planning and Building Department by STC Towers as part of its petition.

Nearby Wittenburg Village, a senior living complex that neighbors the proposed site, objected in a letter to city officials to having a cell tower there. Neighbors within 100 feet are required by city code to be notified of a petitioner's intent for a location.

Wittenberg Village officials said in the letter the tower would be "very visible" to its campus.
