HAMMOND | Indicted former Lake County Clerk Thomas Philpot is seeking a two- or three-month delay in his federal corruption trial, court records show.

Philpot's attorneys filed the request Thursday for a 60- to 90-day delay of his July 9 Hammond federal court trial on charges of mail fraud and theft from a federally funded program.

His attorneys claim in court documents they need more time to prepare their case.

Philpot, who now serves as Lake County coroner, is accused of illegally paying himself federal grant money between 2004 and 2009 when he was county clerk.

The recent court filing notes that federal prosecutors object to the requested trial delay.
