Local police and firefighters are set to compete in a charity softball tournament that will benefit a summer camp for children with burn injuries.
The first Guns and Hoses tournament starts at 8 a.m. Aug. 25 at the U.S. Steel Yard in Gary, said Steven Minchuk, a Merrillville firefighter and an organizer of the event. The championship game starts at 7 p.m.
Tickets to the event are $10 each. Proceeds will go to the Hoosier Burn Camp.
In addition to typical summer camp activities, Hoosier Burn Camp teaches life skills to help children fully recover from the trauma of burn injuries.
Minchuk said the camp is completely operated through donations.
There will be six teams competing in the softball tournament.
The firefighter bracket consists of teams from the Crown Point, Merrillville and Lowell fire departments, Minchuk said.
In the police bracket are the Lake County Sheriff's Department, Gary Police Department and Chicago Metro teams. Minchuk said the Chicago Metro team has officers from Northwest Indiana and Illinois.
Other departments have expressed interest in participating. Minchuk said he is unable to expand the tournament size at this time.
In addition to the games, there will be other activities, Minchuk said.
Local honor guards will be in attendance, and the Lake County Pipes and Drums will perform.
Organizers are seeking volunteers and donations for the tournament.
